Okay... as some of you who have seen my other post's may know, I'm fairly new to the series. And after playing through upto book 11 (I think the one with the Chaosmaster in) I've decided to go again from the beginning but some of the rules or there interpretations are puzzling me.
One that is way up there is the special items weapon rules:
Now I have always thought of the Sommerswerd as being special 9due to its awaresome powers) but even though it had the special item reference when you recieve it, it never (as far as I an remeber) tells you were you hold it. Just say's mark it down on the adventure, which I have always done as being one of my main weapons (in hand).
Now from reading around on here, I am seeing a lot of people say that its a special weapon so doesn't count as being a in hand weapon... so you may carry two normal weapons also.
So my questions are as follows: 1)if your carrying two in hand weapons, how do you use the Sommerswerd? you have no more arms. 2.) If you are carrying the Sommerswerd (not in hands but just on special items) Does its bonuses still apply? 3.) If your robbed/locked up/lose etc your weapons and equipment (but not special items) do you still lose the Sommerswerd (and for that matter any other special item weapons) or do you still posses them? 4.) is there a limit on how many special item weapons you can carry? (i.e silver bow, Vashna's Dagger, Sommerswerd, Jeweled mace).
Once again i thank you in advanced. I really need to get all these rules formulated right in my head if I want to go through these books properly.

According to my book 2 when you first realize the power of the Sommerswerd (thru Sixth Sense) it states "Note the powers of the sword under the Special Items section of your action chart." While listing the powers and not the sword is ambiguous it's definitively stated by Mr. Dever in book 13: "... only the following Special Items may be carried over to the LW Grand Master Series: Sommerswerd, etc."
So my answers to your questions (by my interpretations, certainly open to others) are:
1) You can carry two weapons plus the Sommerswerd.
2) You have to USE the Sommerswerd for it's bonuses to be applicable.
3) The author's pretty clear in those circumstances so my short answer is yes. You just have to hope you find your equipment later.
4) Initially there was no stated limit on Special Items but it became 12 (at the start of the GM series I think).

Quick and simple answers.
1. Assume that you keep it in a scabbard at your side/at your back/whatever.
2. Nope, you actually have to use it.
3. Personally, I assume I can keep the Sommerswerd when I lose my Weapons.
See Book 18 when you're in Duadon for an example of keeping the Sommerswerd when your weapons have been lost.
4. 12 in the Magnakai series, but none earlier than that. But I always assume that this is retroactive, and stick to 12 throughout.

Regarding question 3, you do lose all your equipment when you're captured in books 5 and 7. Fortunately, there's a way to get it back. Don't really remember about other books though.

I always assumed that you carried the Sommerswerd in a sheath at your waist as Helshezag is worn on your back, beneath your Backpack.

I too would think that Lonewolf's inventory would become troublesome with all of the possible weapons he may be carrying. It would be hard to imagine a warrior that could be very stealthy while he's carrying an axe, a broadsword, a shield and say, 3-4 more weapons that are marked as special items.
But consider this, in fantasy lore, most weapons of a magical nature seem to defy convention. For example, magical elven armour or weapons always seem to be extremely light. Now consider that Lonewolf, by all accounts, is a very crafty fellow and would probably come up with simple solutions for problems of this matter. If his inventory consisted of the following items:
Broadsword Axe Shield Sommerswerd Dagger of Vashna Helmet Chainmail Silver Bow (whatever it was from Jungle of Horrors) (Is this a special item or a weapon? correct me if I'm wrong)
I would picture he has a belt with a scabbord for both the axe and broadsword, (maybe he just tucks them into the belt if he had no scabbord) he'd prolly tuck the dagger of Vashna into his boot, (sheathed of course [maybe he buillt a stealthy slot for sliding the blade into in his boot], no need to shoot [stab] himself in the foot, ahem...) both the shield and bow would be slung over his shoulder or around his pack, of course he'd wear the helm and chainmail, and I always pictured some really cool way of sheathing the sommerswerd either over his shoulder under his pack, or maybe under his arm with the hilt facing down under his pack so it is always ready to be drawn. Of course, any normal sword sheathed this way would simply fall out of the scabbord at the most inoppurtune time, but the Sommerswerd being of a magical nature stays kinda of like a sword in the stone type deal until LW draws it out. As far as the usability issue, consider him the fastest draw in the north, Doc Holliday was everyone's Daisy 'cause he had unbelievable skill beating opponents to the draw, I picture LW drawing weapons with lightning speed and deadly precision.
Lonewolf is supposed to be the badass of his time, carrying tons of weapons ninja style is part of what makes him so [darn] cool. The smallest concern he has would be inventory management (aside from the numerous times he seems to loose it). I mean come on, if I bad a nickel for every FPS hero who managed to carry 8 rocketlaunchers, 15 machine guns, 23 pistols, 2 shotguns, a railgun, 3 alien laser rifles, a sniper rifle, and the obligatory BFG, I'd be a rich man.

I mis-read question 3. Since the Sommerswerd is considered a special item you would still have it after losing your weapons. Sorry for the confusion. Also, my interpretation on the Silver Bow is that it's a Weapons item until book 13 when it becomes a Special item. Don't ask me why.*shrug*

I think it would read: "Lose all weapons and weapon-like special items" in order for you to lose the SS, DoV, H, SBoD, etc. Otherwise, you keep them. Joe clarified more about weapon-like special items partway through the series, due to confusion about people losing weapons in certain cases.

Also, my interpretation on the Silver Bow is that it's a Weapons item until book 13 when it becomes a Special item. Don't ask me why.*shrug* Hmm, I always took it the other way. I figured that when Joe Dever got to the Grandmaster series he realized that the Silver Oak Bow should have been considered a Special Item so he began to count it as that. So with that knowledge I ALWAYS considered the Silver Oak Bow a Special Iitem.

There are times when I think you should consider the situation regarding which items to drop when you are instructed to remove weapons from inventory. If you are swimming, or in some other situation where you must drop your weapons to survive, I only drop the 2 normal weapons I am carrying - it would be a waste if a hero dropped the bane of his enemies to cut 5 pounds for a swim.
But, in situations where LW is captured, and told to remove weapons, I remove them all. It's hard to imagine this exchange between minions of destruction:
Minion 1: "Take his weapons."
Minion 2: "Which ones?"
Minion 1: "You imbecile! Those two right there on his belt!"
Minions 2: "Uhhh, right.... but what about that glowing gold sword on his back, the ornate dagger and the expensive looking silver bow?"
*SLAAAP!
Minion 1: "I SAID THOSE TWO ON HIS BELT YOU FOOL! What could those other weapons possibly do? THEY'RE SPECIAL ITEMS!"

Hmm, I always took it the other way. I figured that when Joe Dever got to the Grandmaster series he realized that the Silver Oak Bow should have been considered a Special Item so he began to count it as that. So with that knowledge I ALWAYS considered the Silver Oak Bow a Special Iitem. I agree the Silver Bow is and should be considered a Special Item. My point is Joe Dever clearly states in book 6 to enter it the weapons section of the action chart. It's only at the start of book 13 that he lists it as a Special Item. Hence my Keeping the bow in the weapons slot was no big deal but I did learn to always have another weapon available in case I came across a passage that said my weapon was "lost" or "damaged".

It's only at the start of book 13 that he lists it as a Special Item. Actually, that isn't true. In Section 87 of The Jungle of Horrors the Silver Bow is referenced as a Special Item--though not by name! If you start reading from Section 168 of TJOH you'll see that it is the Silver Bow of Duadon being referenced, and that Joe definitely considered it to be a Special Item.

Wow, I'd never come across that passage, thanks outspaced!
Whether or not Joe Dever made a mistake, it seems more than fair to immediately list the Silver Bow as a Special Item.

Heh Outspaced, my resident twin brother whom I've never met and share no DNA with Well, as regards those weapon Special Items, it still classify as both, so I have both the Silver Bow and the Sommerswerd, I don't take any other weapons (I don't dual-style with The Sword). If I didn't have The Sword, I might take the Bow, Helshezag and the Bronin Warhammer, because it makes sense that you can have two hand weapons and a bow. They still all take up slots in my Special Items section. NS.

Interesting tidbit about the Sommerswerd... all these years, I only have given myself the +10 bonus if I have Weaponskill with Swords. That's because I always have 6th Sense and when you get the sword, it says that you may have a +10 "if you have Weaponskill with Swords."
I always thought this meant the regular kind of sword only.
But then, one time, I went through without 6th Sense... and its powers are revealed to you differently... through hard training. And in that section, you are told that you may have the +10 if you have Weaponskill with ANY sword. There's a difference!
I have misinterpreted all of this time. Thanks Joe! Now I will always have twice the chance to consider myself as being Skilled with the Sommerswerd!
(Maybe it is like The Sword of Omens... it changes size depending on your will... in that case, I wonder if Dagger Weaponskill counts as a sword, too?)
