Book 11... We all remember it, don't we? The pain, the agony, the personal competitions for how far we could throw the book after losing to the Chaos-Master for the 35th time . But I digress. A while back, I decided to attempt a game from book 1 where I would start is if I had pulled double zeros when determining EP/CS. I went along ok, having some slight problems in book 8, and a few more in book 10, but nothing the Sommerswerd and a few good rolls coulden't pull me through.
Then I got to Book 11.
I was still going along well, nothing too bad, until I hit the Chaos Master. Even with my:
Silver Helm +2CS
Shield +2CS
Sommerswerd +8CS (+4 more for Weaponmastery)
+4 for my Lore-Circle bonuses
and +4 Psi-Surge, I was still at a 34/47 disavantage. If I used the one Alether obtainable after Book 6, I was still at a -11 disavantage. Even if I kept some Alether in storage before book 6, I would still be hard pressed to get a combat ratio above a -7 combat ratio. Not totally horrible, not likely to live through either.
Alright then, I said to myself, I'll cheat a little and pretend I left the Sommerswerd in the Monestary before book 10. So I went back and redid book 10 without the Sommerswerd (and barely made it through, I might add), and tried with the Ironheart Broadsword.
Aha, I said, now it's a -6 without the Alether, and -4
with it. Of course, I had started with only 20 EN, and I was only up to about 31 with all my bonuses. Not exactly spectactular, but better then -11 by a long shot. So I tried, and tried..., and tried, and finally, I killed the Chaos-Master. Of course, I was almost dead, but still, it was better then being dead. So I gulped down some wine from the Silver Flask, used some other healing I had (Including curing), and marched off. I was able to get the dragon in the eye, forcing it to fly off weeping.
Then I ran into the Shadow Reavers.
I had the Psychic Ring, the Silver Helm, and +5 for my disiplines. Still, -5 was pretty ugly when I was still recovering from the Chaos Master. I managed to tough it out, though, and was able to recover some from the god Kai enounter. So I marched on, and finally got into the temple, where I met:
The Villians of Sommerlund.
Ok, I thought, +12 for the Sommerswerd, and... crap, I left that in storage. Which meant that my max CS (without any Alether) was...22. Which meant a -16 Combat Ratio. Even if, by some miracle, I managed to get through them, there was still you-know-who to attempt to kill, and he's no pushover in the best of circumstances. With the Sommerswerd, this battle would be at least passable... But then what about the Chaos-Master? ARRRGH! In other words, I believe that getting through Book 11, if you pull double zeroes in Book 1, is nigh on impossible.
Your opinions? Any thoughts? Perhaps ideas on how to get through this evil gauntlet without cheating... many, many times. This sucks also because Book 12 is one of my all time favorites, with all the cool upgrades and options, and I was really looking forward to trying it with these rules...
