If you throw away your maps to free up a special item space, would it hurt you?
Maybe you shouldn't be able to consult it unless you have it on your Action Chart!
The only place I can immediately think of that could be BIG trouble if you don't have it would be Book 5 where Banedon is trying to figure out Tipasa's diary and you need to use the map to figure it out.
Granted, you need the Map of Tekaro in book 6 if you don't like dying, but that's kind of different since it is not a "free" map given to you when you start your adventure.

The way the books are designed, you are not supposed to be able to consult your map unless you have it on you. This means if you have maps from previous books, you may consult the maps in those books at any time.

I thought it was only the Map of Sommerlund from the beginning of Books 1 & 2 that counted as Special Items? From Book 3 onwards, I can't remember the rules ever saying how you list the map. I always just assumed that I always had it on me, and didn't list it at all.

I always just assumed that I always had it on me, and didn't list it at all. That's exactly right. Only in the first book (and maybe the second one as well) does it ever mention that the map you get at the beginning is a special item. The rest of the books only ever say that you get a map, they never tell you to right it down on your adventure sheet.

Possibly... but any item that you are allowed to carry is listed with Uppercase Letters. That implies that you have to list it as an item. Or does it?

I don't think so, because you'd have to guess it. Anyways, it's not like they can't let you look at the front page of the book anytime you want! Also, you can always drop any item you're carrying. So if you drop the map, what do you do when they tell you to consult the map at the front of the book? Let's just say that it's an extra 13th "free" special item you're allowed to carry at all times and can never lose. It's taped to your underwear.

Does underwear count as a Special Item? IIRC, your friend that lost his pants after the Caeno Derby (book 22) doesn't seem to wear underwear, so maybe it is a VERY rare and valuable special item. ;D

Underwear does count as a special item. The reason Lone Wolf never takes off his outer clothes is because he alwyas leaves his underwear at home. It does take up a valuable special item space, after all. And who needs clothes when you've got Magnakai Nexus?

He puts them in Safekeeping? Yeah, it's the real reason the Vault of the Sun was built...
