Ahhh the infamous Tarnalin bottleneck... the only time AK actually comes in handy. Pity we don't get the opportunity to slaughter the noodnics en masse. or at least buy a cat in port bax. Still the Sommerswerd is worth putting up with them for. Almost.

How do you get magic spear?
It's look for me that the book 2 should be improved, to be passable without magic spear. I've made reasonable choices, and didn't saw anywhere that magic spear. Generally the page 340 of book 2, which leads to the inevitable death without magic spear, is very bad from the traditions of the genre, from my point of view. First, it makes magic spear a must have item, and the genre suppose that you should have several options to avoid danger with more or less troubles. Second, it leads just to the two pages 64 and 164 which are identical situations with some differences in description, what is also bad. I think that one of the pages - 64 or 164 - should be passable without magic spear.
" What I normally do to prevent frustration at dieing repeatedly is to keep a 'death score', counting the number of times my character's died. Obviously I want to keep this number low! So, if LW dies through loss of Endurance, I'll restore his E to full, add 1 to my death score, and carry on (with the battle, or through the book if I died out of combat). " - man, you are obviously great, but playing a computer version of the book (v. 1.16.1) you can only start the entire book again when you came to unpassable situation.

Animal Kinship no longer helps, since the text in the entrance to Tarnalin was revised.
You now have to fight the Helghast and take the magic spear from it.
Go left at 150 (right is just one long inevitable death path now, but if character looks at map it should be clear that the left path is prone to be better), then stop to investigate, attack the szalls, and you will meet the helghast. If you try to aid the man, then you must decline using camouflage on the next section.

In the first prints, then animal kinship helps if you do not give away the spear. I know this is changed in the Red Fox edition and it is the same in the later Mongoose version. You must have the spear but if you give the spear away then animal kinship can save you.

I have a feeling that only I adopt current game practices, which is to save the game progress anytime we want. So, in case of LW dies, I just flip back to previous section and choose the next option. This is made easier with HTML version with few clicks and then, voila! The first time I played, I have LW stuck at Tornalin and then I searched the entire book on where to find the Magical Spear. Cheating? Yeah, you could say that.

Actually it is funny you should mention that, because I felt the fact that the random number tables purpose was that eventually with a lot of use you could learn where the 0s and 9s were and even though you still closed your eyes you learned where the good numbers were and that bias was "gained" from experience. I felt that was part of the design... Yup, same here. But with the creation of LWAC, now I can no longer do that.
