The Kagonite Chainmail that is mentioned in the Rules section of the Grandmaster series... I always took it to be the same as the Bronin Vest. But I just read a thread that leads me to believe otherwise. Is there a separate thing called Kagonite Chainmail, and if so, where is it found?

Yes, it is a separate item. You can find it in book 12. During the naval battle after the Xargath, when the second irocland is closing , you're asked to pick a random number to avoid collision. If you fail, then you get to meet the enemy who carries the Kagonite Chainmail.

If you fail, then you get to meet the enemy who carries the Kagonite Chainmail. This chainmail is hard to get if you have played other books of the Magnakai series because you need less than 9 with the RNT to actually get the chance to get the chainmail. Because of the 8 extra disciplines you can gained by completing the other books, you have to add up to 8 points to this number. If you still manage to get less than 10 points, then you have to fight all the ennemies that come in your way (don't escape any fight) before you get the choice to search the death bodies or not. Make the search and pick the magical chainmail vest.

I got the chainmail during my last play-through. Even if you've finished all the books up to that point, you still have a 40% chance of getting it (it says "For every Magnakai Discipline you possess above your initial three skills, add 1 to the number you have picked", so the most you can add is 6 and you can pick 0-3 and still get it). That's almost half. Not a bad statistic.

I believe the point was to balance out the game for those poor folks who haven't been able to get all the books in order, so a goody or two is thrown in their direction to help out their pathetic CS.
And all you Sommerswerd-wielding, Silver Helmet-wearing, Alether-chewing CS junkies just waaaaant to get every goody in the game. Gotta get them all! All mine! Myyyy precioussssss!!

No doubt, I agree with you that that is what he was doing there, clearly. However, it's odd that he allowed you to carry over the Kagonite Chainmail to the Grandmaster adventures but not the Bronin Vest... in that sense, suddenly the balance of power shifted greatly in favor of those with the once-pathetic CS.... sort of an anti-loyalty-bonus.

It is amazing how armor seems to take up SO MUCH special item space. On the other hand I would not have it any other way since these are the BEST specials you can get. Anything that raises CS or EP is pure gold.

Actually, there is a difference. When you pick up the chainmail, the text says that it is so light that you can wear it under another metallic or leather armour. So you could even combine the Bronin Vest and the Kagonite Chainmail in book 12! However, the Bronin Vest doesn't give you this option, which makes me believe it is actually bulkier than the fine Kagonite chainmail. A Grand Master, to benefit from all of his awesome skills, probably needs to be pretty quiet and inconspicuous, thus would only ever wear the finest and lightest of armour under his tunic. However he's still happy wearing his silver helmet everywhere. ;D

Maybe Lone Wolf can tie one hand behind his back in order to get a -6 to his "find kagonite" roll.

Maybe Lone Wolf can tie one hand behind his back in order to get a -6 to his "find kagonite" roll. He would also need to be clairvoyant to know that the kagonite is there in the first place. Some kind of extra-special Divination, maybe. A new Kai Discipline called "Detect Treasure": Detect Treasure: You have trained for years to search out every last little treasure you can lay your grubby hands on, so much so that you have an innate sense for when significant items may be nearby. In dungeons, you will always instinctively pick the route with the most loot. When faced with multiple chests only one of which can be opened, you will always pick the one with the most valuable treasure. In game shows, you will never pick the boobie prize. The downside of this discipline is that your incredible greed sometimes causes you to take unnecessary risks and/or forget your mission in the search for loot, loot and more loot.
