Concerning the guides in kalte, it's extremely probable they die, and not so much that they live. I don't really agree to that and here's why: 1. You are not expected back for many days when you arrive magically at the boat. Thus the guides have not returned and informed anyone of the problems you faced. You leave at once, leaving the guides (dead or alive) behind. The chances of them making it to another port, surviving the winter (cause remember, ships can't sail until after the winter), and then bartering for passage on another ship is unlikely at best. There's no worry for them if you abandonned them alive on Kalte. If you fell into a chasm, the guides thought that you were dead, and they headed back home with enough food for 4 persons. They know how to survive in the cold, so they might make it easily to Ljuk without a problem. 2. Kalte is dangerous. The guides have a hell of a time ahead of them, if they're gonna make it back. Not only that, but a good amount of the equipment has been used. They are guides, they know how to survive in the worst conditions, and they know Kalte very well. 3. There are Ice Barbarians frantically searching for you on Vonotar's orders. They will most likely find the guides before they make it back. I prefer to think that once they learn that Vonotar is missing, they will just fight each other to take the empty throne. 4. Lone Wolf's sixth sense ability has been heightened by the Sommerswerd. If he says they're dead, then they are dead. I don't remember Lone Wolf saying: "I know they are dead, I send them to their doom, I should kill myself for that!" So, if Lone Wolf says that they are alive, then they are alive! Anyway, that's just my way of seeing things.

But he doesn't say they're alive. He grieves for them at the end of the book.

But he doesn't say they're alive. He grieves for them at the end of the book. Methinks there would be a WHOLE LOT of really angry Ice Barbarians once Vonotar is gone. Also yes, the Guides are excellent, but that doesn't prevent them from being attacked by monsters of all kinds every other step, and that's when Lone Wolf is with them. Imagine how they would do WITHOUT a warrior. Toast. Toast I say! You know, I can see it now: --- Irian: "I've been counting the days - we should arrive at the ship before it is forced to leave these shores." Dyce: "Yes, ah, the danger, the hardships, I am so cold! "Over this ridge, just a little father..." (Ship is totally gone dude - Lone Wolf felt like leaving WAY early, grieving his guides as he sails away) Irian: FIDDLESTIXXXX!!!!!! --- Seriously, though, Loi Kymar could have just teleported you back to Toran, duh. Then the ship could have waited for your guides. I mean, what is the good of having the Guidstaff otherwise? --- Loi Kymar: With the Power of my Magical Guidstaff, I will teleport us to Freedom! Lone Wolf: Great, my toes are so flipping cold... Loi Kymar: And with a wave of my wand, I wisk us away (Vonotar and Lone Wolf look around) Vonotar: Ah, it seems we are still in Kalte. Lone Wolf: Uh-huh

I wonder...if the guides survived and found a way back to Anskaven, what would they say if they meet Lone Wolf after that? Guides: Hey, remember us? LW: Errr...oh yeah, you were my guides in Kalte! Glad to see you. So, how's your lifes now? Dyce: I lost my two arms because of the cold while we where making our way to Ljuk because their was ship waiting for us where it was supposed to be! Irian: I had to cut my leg after a Kalkoth bit me to avoid its poison to reach the rest of my body! That was near Ljuk! Fenor: My wife thought that I was dead since I was late from coming back from Kalte. When I finally arrived, she was getting consoled by a merchant...in my bed! LW: Errr...Oh, look at the time! I...I...need to...go somewhere like...errr...now. It was a pleasure to...errr see you.

As far as I'm concerned, they knew what they were getting into. Lone Wolf's allies often come a cropper. I mean, even as early as Book 3... Lord Lieutenant Rhygar got eaten by Helghast. Admiral Calfen got his ship sunk. And this only after two adventures... And don't get me started on all the poor Kai Lords who got eaten by Kraan. Anyone stupid enough to help out Lone Wolf deserves what they get. -GB

Yeah, even the people he saves have horrible fates.
Like Castle Death's prisoner. And Paido for that matter.
But he is called LONE wolf.

"I'm Lone Wolf - savior of Magnamund. But not the savior of: The First Order of Kai, Lord Lieutenant Rhygar, Irian, Fenor, Dyce, Admiral Calfen, the whole entire crew of the Green Sceptre, the King's Cavalry Scouts, the crew of that ship that took me to Vassagonia, etc etc"

Whenever the king assigns people to help Lone Wolf, he probably picks people he doesn't like. That way, he can get rid of them and keep his hands clean at the same time.
Banedon must have some special item that keeps him safe.

Loi-Kymar seems to do okay considering the length of time he spent in LW's company. Then again, he probably died the following week in his bed aged 99, moving the Toran Bugle to lead with the headline "CURSE OF LONE WOLF STRIKES AGAIN!" ;D

Prarg is another friend of Lone Wolf that doesn't die. He met him 3 times and always managed to survive. Okay, it was close on 2-3 occasions in book 15, but for some reasons, he his still alive! Prarg is the only guy without magical powers that saw Lone Wolf and survived to talk about it! ;D

Three times? Does he come along in Book 17 too then? I've only met him twice. Caermine didn't die either, as far as we know.

You can meet Prarg in book 10, 15 and 17, and you fight along his side in all these books.

Yeah, the Battle of Cetza, and in the Darke Crusade. I've not read Book 17 yet, so I've not met him there.

I like the one where it shows one mitten-wearing hand slipping over the edge, that really says it all! Gary Chalk really had a talent when it came to camera angles. I don't know if anybody else realized this but I sure as hell did.
