After 10 or so "fresh start" runthroughs of book 8, I finally got past that evil silver serpent and even more evil vordaks (which is damned hard in 5 rounds without the Sommerswerd) and got the "fresh start" award. Then commenced book 9 and decided to change the RNT setting back to auto (I had it on fast speed to aid my cause against the vordaks).

SS crashed with a runtime error and on relaunch... no fresh start award for book 8 which I'd already achieved (and was displayed as a new award in my profile prior to the crash)....

Oh, man, that's really awful! I'm sorry that happened.

Your story here made me realize that I should have Seventh Sense save the profiles file whenever you earn an award, since currently, it only writes it when you close the program (which, as in this case, means that if it crashes, those new awards are not saved!) That'll be one of the changes coming up soon.

In the meantime, tell you what - send me your profiles.dat file via email, and I'll manually put the award in for you and send it back. I'd hate for you to have to go through all that again...

That change has now been implemented - anytime LW earns an award, the profiles are saved, so you won't lose it, on the off-chance that the program crashes afterward.
