Footnote 19 in Fire on the Water suggests that it is mandatory to buy the papers from the boy in entry 327. But it you do so, then show them to the official in the Port Watchtower, it results in instant death. So why the footnote?

In order to ensure the endless cycle gets broken I presume. If you don't have the Seal of Hammerdal, then you need to restart but that's the only event that will kill you there.

If you reach Port Bax without the Seal of Hammerdal, you get into an endless loop of walking around the port quarter (with a few variations): Section 265, 84, 191, 246, 327, 84, etc. The footnote in 327 forces the game to end: 191, 318, 62, 126.

A problem with the footnote making it appear mandatory to buy the papers, is that you might have the Seal, but walked straight to the red gate where you're refused entry. Then this footnote might actually lure you into showing the papers in the port watchtower even though you could have avoided the instadeath.

Funnily in the Mongoose version the red gate section actually says you can avoid giving your papers only if you have Seal (which I think is a new note?) Yet I did not see the Aon footnote there. So seems like the new book is worded as is backing up that footnote without having the footnote.

I don't see how we can word the footnote any differently without giving away a huge spoiler. The Story So Far makes it clear that the Seal of Hammerdal identifies its wearer as being on a mission from the King of Sommerlund. On reaching Section 327, it is up to the reader to determine whether some papers bought from a street urchin are really going to identify their owner as being from King Ulnar, or whether they should reveal the Seal of Hammerdal to the Port Authority. I don't know what else to say.
