So this is probably just a "me" thing, but I would like some opinions on it.
When I have rolled Lone Wolf's beginning stats in the past, I have always based it on real world of a sort. What I mean is I have a scale that I apply. The scale goes from 10-19, with 19 being seen as a protégé of a sort with weapons. As in he has a gift with weapons and does amazing things with them.
I see 10-13 as being someone who has never picked up a weapon in their life.
I see 14 and 15 as being a soldier, someone who has been trained with a weapon, has a pretty good idea of how to use it..
I see 16,17 and 18 has being where most Kai should be, better than average with a weapon, with myself being put into that mindset of 17 is preferable as that is where I would see myself if I had been trained with the Kai. Not a protégé but damn good with a sword.
I am curious if anyone else does it that way or something similar, or if it is just me..

I can't say that I have thought about it exactly that way, but the perspective you bring to it is interesting.
There is certainly a large difference in fighting prowess between a Combat Skill 10 and Combat Skill 19 character.
You could also use the CS of various opponents as a way to calibrate your thinking about how to translate each Combat Skill number into a visualized character (well, at least in the Kai series.....there is clear Combat Skill "evolution" in the strength of your opponents in the later series...)

To get 10 as base cs value it means you have trained in the use of weapons.
Mages with limited weapon training usually would start off at around 5 cs (1 to 14).
Someone who'd never held a weapon, probably would start at 0 cs (0 to 9.
The range tells how well your training has progressed when compared to others with similar training expectancy as you.
