In the Lone Wolf series Lone Wolf gets a powerful artifact, the Sommerswerd, very early in his adventures, specifically in book 2 where Lone Wolf is more or less equivalent to a level 6 D&D character (I would say the Lone Wolf series starts out with Lone Wolf being at level 5 in FFTD and that he gains a level upon the completion of each book, if we were to put Lone Wolf in a D&D format.) Some LW fans say he should not have acquired such a powerful artifact so early on or that he shouldn't've kept it as it creates a tremendous imbalance. I would say that yes it does, it immediately gives you a tremendous +8 CS bonus and that's where the imbalance lies. It also makes you immune to most magical attacks and able to do double damage on undead but I would say the main imbalance is the big CS bonus you get. That being said this is how I think it should've worked, when you first get the Sommerswerd in book 2, due to your relatively low level of experience as a Kai Lord, you're only able to unlock its powers enough to get a +2 bonus. As you become more advanced and experienced you're able to unlock more of its powers, perhaps you should be able to unlock an additional +2 CS bonus upon the completion of each consecutive book in the kai series so that by the time you complete SOTS you're able to unlock its full +8 CS.

In Seventh Sense's Hardcore Mode, the 'Swerd is nerfed to give a +2 CS bonus at all times. It's power doesn't grow or shrink.
In the newer "S" fork, Hardcore Mode is very different, and one of the changed things is similar to your idea... but in reverse. The 'Swerd gradually loses its power across the series. The program dev has said there is a way to recharge it, but I haven't figured that out.
I like your version. Reminds me of artifact weapons in World of Warcraft, which were amazing.
