Looking on the Lone Wolf character test thread in Auxiliary Creations, I noticed a slight undercurrent of cynicism towards Paul Barnett's (John Grant's) character of Alyss. Got me wondering: what do you all think of the Legends? Did you think they captured and expanded on the gamebooks well, or did they just over-complicate what is essentially an uncomplicated series of solo RPG adventures?

Hehehe, what a perfect opportunity to read back through those past discussions... I absolutely loved some of it. Outspaced was in particularly fine form, no? In summary, Gothmog: * Many people dislike the Legends as a whole. * Many people like them. * Even those who dislike them as a whole did enjoy certain of the books. * Many people dislike most of Grant's new characters. Qinefer in particular is usually written Q****** around here as though her name were a dirty word. * Very few people like them. * Many people dislike Grant's philosophical slant and 'spiritual' elements. * I've heard nothing good said about them.

I will add to that list that specifically people seem to like the first book. I myself am also a fan of Alyss as she appears in book 1, in the Lone Wolf series through Dever's eyes, and in fan fiction. I was thinking of throwing her into the character quiz, but I didn't want to turn people off of it She might still show up to surprise a few of you. Hee hee... but don't worry, I won't make you have a revelation that you are Quinifer.

I have Eclipse of the Kai and The Dark Door Opens as one book together, which JD kindly signed for me at the Mongoose convention ;D They are definitely the best in the series.

Do you think the Legends are overall mitigated by the existence of these threads? I must say, they do a good job... She achieved tao? No, she got on my tits. Believe me, that's a big difference. You're touched by the colours and the colours SHUT UP!!! Create some female characters who are actually likeable. Who fit into the framework of the universe of Aon. Who aren't both superpowered, arrogant, better than everyone else at everything, smug know-it-alls who both (so we are led to believe) go on to bigger and better things--far better than saving the . . . ing world of Magnamund and therefore the whole . . . ing universe of Aon! Yeah, I bet you've got better things to do than that, you arrogant, egocentric bint! . . . and relax. Good times...

The Tellings bored me stiff and this was when I was younger and I could happily page after page of rubbish without being too critical! Hell, I read one of the later Wheel of Time books and the fact that it had a 62-page prologue didn't faze me! Ah, the follies of youth.

I've read all but the final Legends book, and firmly believe that they could mostly be rewritten in a far better manner by some actual Lone Wolf fans who have relatively little writing experience that wasn't being handed in to a teacher. I'm sure they would stick truer to the books as a whole, and have much less superfluous junk that people would have to read through to make their way back to non-Useless Wolf. Right Peregrine? ~Relenoir, who may end up collaborating with Peregrine on this venture at a later date.

Well, to do that, you'd need JD's notes about what the actual LW is doing all this time and precisely how much of all that stuff Joe actually approved of.
And as apocryphal stuff goes, that "bland 21st Century stuff" was quite amusing. Technically speaking, it was distinctly early-mid 90s (20th Century!) as the Professor mentions the little green text on his screen.

Back when names like Compaq, Commodore, Tandy, Atari Apple I, and Wang were around!

Well, *I* was still using little green letters at school and that was the early-mid '90s! NS. Edit: Then again, we were still playing Moonquake and Populous: The Tribes on Acorns!
