I saw an artist named Gleb Poturaev taking commissions online, so I sent him the contest template. I didn't show him any of the other pictures or give him much context other than the original contest instructions. He came up with this idea in a matter of minutes.

Do you plan to redo the contest 32 years later? We now have your submissions, the one from that young Alex and the one from that artist. Call for submissions and set up a poll to vote for the best entry!

Do you plan to redo the contest 32 years later? I am just having a good time. I would enjoy seeing what other people would do with the template, but I would rather leave it open-ended.
However, I have thought about how I would judge the contest if I held another one. The template gets in the way of doing a good drawing, so part of the fun is figuring out how to work within the constraints (or work around them). I might have prizes for different categories of drawings.
- Best rendering (detail, quality, etc.)
- Most creative use of the template
- Most interesting monster or adversary
- Best backstory (maybe with a limit on the number of words)
- Best reproduction of Gary Chalk's style

Back in 1989, the first prize for each each age category was a "Lorus LCD Chrono/Alarm wristwatch with Time; Calendar; Alarm; 1/100th stopwatch; split time; & hourly time facilities." I don't know exactly what model they were, but here's one from eBay that looks about right.
Second prize was a signed copy of Eclipse of the Kai. Of course, we would all rather have that today.
It looks like Lorus is still making digital watches. Here is a more recent one.
I think that would make a good prize for a new contest in 2021, but what are you going to do with it? Give it to your kids? Don't they already have smartphones of their own?

I'm getting old and hate the idea of elementary schoolers having smartphones, but I can also imagine it would be a social handicap if they didn't.
I liked wearing a digital watch as a youngster but as an adult I started carrying them in my pocket instead, then stopped altogether once I started using a mobile phone, probably a lot later than most people (2007-ish). My mom likes to joke that, prior to being the target age for LW books, I was a watch black hole. I kept losing them!

I am trying to copy Gary Chalk's style for this Giak, but my own aesthetic keeps creeping in.

Still not exactly Gary Chalk's style, but getting closer.

I added color.
I decided that the leather armor was made from the skins of other Giaks. I intentionally tried to misunderstand the anatomy of hands in the same way that Chalk misunderstood it, but now it is bothering me.

I guess those kids (now adults) have made a lot for Lone Wolf´s survival.

I adapted a picture by Mike Mignola (the creator of Hellboy). Mignola drew the original in 1982, which was seven years before the draw-a-monster contest took place.
