Issue 14 of the newsletter for the Lone Wolf Club appeared in 1989 with a contest to draw a Lone Wolf monster.
The deadline for submissions was thirty-one years ago, but I just found out about the contest and I have been thinking about it a lot.

Let's talk about the template they give you. Look at the relationships of the boots, the sword and the frame. I tried to figure out how to approach this with an artist's mannequin. The template puts you in a tough spot to get the proportions right in your picture.

The proportions make me think of this kobold from the D&D 2nd Edition Monstrous Compendium.
Even then, the frame is a little crowded.

Here I am experimenting to see how much I need to stretch the anatomy of a basic humanoid to fit into the template.

Edit: I added a spider for him to react to. It's like a regular spider, but it can fly. Just imagine flying spiders. They hover in the air like moths, but they're completely silent. You might catch a glimpse of one from the corner of your eye, but otherwise you never know it's there until it plops down on your neck.

"The small, child-like creature holds a cutlass out in front of himself. The blade undulates with pale blue flame. Your sixth sense tells you he is using the cutlass to control the movements of the giant."

"The magic boots rest on a stone pedestal, but before you can claim them you must defeat their guardian in combat."

I showed some of the earlier work to a friend, who immediately said the sword position would make sense if the person held it in both hands. I have to admit that's better and I just didn't see it before. I used a lot of reference material for this picture, but especially the work of John Buscema, who worked at Marvel in the 1960s and 1970s and did a lot of work on Conan the Barbarian.

Lemme just say, the snake boots are hilarious. Thanks! Out of all the pictures I've drawn here so far, those were the most fun for me.

"A powerful sense of evil radiates from the mime. He brandishes a club shaped like a fish and prepares to attack you. You look forward to stabbing him repeatedly."
The thing I like best about this picture is that the enormous shoes finally make sense.
