I just got my copies of Books 30 and 31 recently, so I am getting acquainted with the art of Richard "NerdGore" Sampson.
He seems like a great choice. He inks his work with a brush. He is a fan of the series from way back. His style is a good fit.
This has probably all been discussed elsewhere, but it's new to me.

Sampson likes to draw pictures for punk and metal bands.
It is interesting how he adapts his style for Lone Wolf.

You know he also did the illustrations for the extended edition of book 1 DE too? It had been originally announced that he would also do all the illustrations for all the DEs but in the end, Holmgard Press decided to go back with the original illustrations of Gary Chalk starting with book 2. That Vonotar illustration is probably one he did for book 3 before the publisher came back on its decision. I wonder if they will ask him to do the illustrations for the remaining books after book 8 or if they will reuse Brian Williams work. I think he is one of my favorite illustrators from the reprint editions.

I did read that Sampson had done illustrations for Book 1. I didn't know Holmgard Press was going back to the original illustrations for the other books.
Here is Sampson's illustration for the Graveyard of the Ancients.
Chalk's original drawing is such an iconic part of the series for me. I have no idea how I would draw a new version of it if I had to. I like Sampson's take on it, though.

Agreed that Richard Sampson's interior art is excellent and easily as good as Gary Chalk's and Brian Williams' art.
Having said that, I have been also impressed by the interior art of the German versions of the Grey Star books, by Hauke Kock I believe. He also illustrated the CE of Voyage of the Moonstone which is also excellent (especially Oriah who is the hotness).
It will be interesting to see what they have decided to do regarding the books beyond LW8. Perhaps they can stick with one author per series. But who for what? Obviously Kai is already Gary, but the rest could be any of these four and I would be happy.
Other than Gnaag...Brian's illustration in LW12 is utterly perfect and other renditions (especially the ridiculous clown-like one in the CE) just don't do that villain justice. Maybe Richard Sampson could nail it though, as his Vasha in LW31 was awesome.

I love Sampson's art. I think it is the perfect mixture of all the styles that we've seen in LW throughout the years. I would have happily seen him do new art for all the books but I think there was a cost factor to consider, as well as a nostalgia factor.
