I recently upgraded my Firefox browser from 1.07 to 1.5, and now the SVG graphs found over on the Editor's Companion don't display, they just dropout with an obscure error message: Previously, to view SVG files in Firefox 1.07 a plugin was required from Adobe; 1.5 is supposed to support SVG files natively. This is a link to the SVG graph from Flight from the Dark. Is anyone able to natively view it in Firefox 1.5? Is the problem in the dodgy code used to create the SVGs (Hi, Thomas! ;D ) or is it a problem with Firefox that should be reported to programmers? Gah! I wish I were a techhie!

We have an encoding problem... the file is actually a gzip-compressed SVG file, but the server does not tell Firefox that it is. I wonder if naming the files .svgz would convince the server to use a Content-Encoding: gzip header...hm maybe we have to do that ourselves. My Firefox seems confused. Might be my fault. What happens if you other Firefox users try these URLs? www.projectaon.org/staff/thomas/01fftd.svgwww.projectaon.org/staff/thomas/01fftd.svgz

Using firefox 1.0.7 I can still read them fine. They don't scroll down, but I'm guessing that's because they are screen shots? If so, that must be the update that's causing you troubles.

@ Thomas: First link gives the dodgy error Imentioned above. The second link seems to work, and allows scrolling using the mouse-wheel instead of holding down ALT, and also gives a scroll bar. However, the text is misaligned and too big for the small circles. All colours & links seem to be displaying accurately, though, so it's a definite improvement. Thanks! I thought I was being hamfisted as usual. @ Zipp: No, they're not screenshots. On my Fx 1.07 installation, to scroll around you must hold down L-ALT and move the mouse pointer. That should fix it.

. . . Speaking of which, this bug is rather interesting; and it's marked as partially fixed for the next release. The full scaling of the entire SVG file won't be around until at least Fx 2.0, though, by the looks of things. :-\ There's a link on that bug report page to this, which seems to scale the entire graphic up and down (CTRL and +/-). Thomas, any use to you?

Heh, as soon as I saw this topic, I thought, 'Oh hey, Firefox 1.5 is supposed to have native SVG now, I should go check out the Editor's Companion to test it!' Sure enough, same error. I thought the little placeholder-diamond character might have been an artifact of a failed character encoding auto-detect, but then I viewed the source...
(Do I sound like a complete geek if I say I then thought, 'Hmm, looks like it was gzipped'?)
Anyway, the *.svgz link came through fine... sort of. It might have been my connection (which is intermittent at best), but the page kept loading for ages, until I hit stop, at which point it displayed the graph. *kicks connection and tries again* Right, worked that time. All good here.
