Reading pieces of Legacy O' Vashna brought to mind this character. At the time I first read the book, i thought she was a very cool touch, very enigmatic, kinda sexy, devious, etc. I spent many years trying to figure out who she really was. Keep in mind i only had, and have never read beyond, Eclipse of the Kai, though I thought I did for a little while. Turned out to be another series. ANYWAYS, even that only seemed to strengthen her character. I have no idea who Q*OMG!!?WTF!>!? is, nor thog, or even how Alyss ends up acting in Grant's version of apparantly not-so-alone wolf.
My question has two parts. One, who are these extra characters (link me if I'm asking old questions), and what is their and Alyss' final role in Grant's series?
Two, I know that Dever and Grant split off. So what is Alyss still doing in Lone Wolf (Legacy, Wolf's Bane, Curse of Naar)? How is this explained in Dever's series? By explained, I mean I know what she does, but why is she doing it?
Zipp Dementia
PS. Yes, I've read Albion. I know it comes after the Lone Wolf series, but no it doesn't connect at all. I really only read it for Alyss, who I have a slightly unhealthy obsession with. It wasn't a bad read. I thought the ending was weak.

At the site www.magnamund.org there's an interview of Grant, he explains the origin of the 2 characters of Alyss and Q******. The original idea for them is not from Joe Dever !!! In the Grand Master serie, Joe Dever takes elements from the 2 series of books that were "parallel" to Lone Wolf in the 80's: The Legends of Lone Wolf and Grey Star the Wizard. Joe Dever is involved in the main subject of these series, though leaving great freedom-to-write to the 2 authors (Grant and Page). Elements taken from the 2 "parallel" series are: the Moonstone, travels in the Shadowgates (eh, just give a look at book. 11 !), Alyss, the "Jakhsa"(evil-twin) of Lone Wolf (Wolf's Bane), etc.... they are a lot. I think that Joe Dever choose what it seemed cool, and he gave an occasion to compare in the "main" adventures of Lone Wolf. Alyss is a demigod: she's pretty strong !!! See what she can do in books 19 & 20...

Alyss can basically do anything Grant/Barnett wants her to.
Her last appearance in the Legends series is in The Rotting Land where she is an eternal incarnation of Queen Evaine of Talestria. Which I found utterly stupid.
Dever seemed to want to forge recognisible links between the Legends series and the gamebooks because Grant/Barnett had made the novels so incredibly different from the gamebooks. The easiest way to do this was to have Alyss make an appearance in the gamebooks. But as I've said before on this forum, gamebook-Alyss is much more polite and less arrogant than Legends-Alyss. Gamebook-Alyss also has limitations; Legends-Alyss is above all the Gods and can do anything. I don't really like her at all, but gamebook-type is less intolerable than Legends-type.

I always sort of liked Alyss because, come on! - growing up, what young man wouldn't like a cute female demigoddess type? In the Gamebooks, Lone Wolf never even hears of her until Book 16 - and at that time, her name is not revealed to him. Seriously, though, the information she reveals to him at that point I think LW would have been able to figure out with the use of his Kai-granted Divination ability.
On the other hand, wouldn't it be cool if Alyss turned out to be the daughter of Kai and Ishir? I suppose this is plain flat-out not so, but you know, it still would have been cool.
Ciao again, Sol

That was one of my early guesses. Then I thought she might appear in other Dever series (like the Freeway Warrior), which was absolutely not the case. For the longest time I simply believed she was from our world, perhaps a future version of it, which is closer to the point (if you read the WORLD). I think it would've been cool to tie her in further with the series, but Grant keeps a tight lock on all his characters. He even made us stop refering to her (and delete all posts with her name in it) on the LW-ERPG.

I have a question. I've read a few times on these boards about a character whose name starts with Q and is censored, possibly because it's obscene(?). I haven't read that far in the series so I looked at this interview BK mentioned, and I think I found the name... but, well, what's wrong with it?

Yeah I was in that one too. That was when i thought I'd read the Legends series. Oops. Turns out I'd only read the first book and combined it with memories of some other similar series. I even refered to Q becuase I thought they were talking about another character from that other series. What a funk I caused for myself. But now I am supremely curious again: Who is this "Q? ??"

Huh, so from what I gather she's a character introduced into Lone Wolf by this co-author guy to leech off the series' popularity or something. And she's one of "those" characters with supreme and absolute powers that render the whole series practically useless, a lot of latent teenage angst and a big inner problem/conflict which may or may not be caused by evil dark forces. Bo-ring, textbook case of a crappy pseudo-"deep" character. Off with his head.

That's exactly what I'm thinking! I never read the Legends series (and I probably will never have the chance to), but with what other said about Qinefer (yes, that's her real name! Sorry to all of those who get headaches when hearing the name ), I don't miss a lot of things.

He even made us stop refering to her (and delete all posts with her name in it) on the LW-ERPG. Except for those of us who can't really stand the bint--that could easily have ruined many a good gamebook. And if I were Grant/Barnett, I wouldn't keep a tight lock on her, I'd try to fob her off on some poor, unsuspecting person then deny all responsibility. ;D

Oh I didn't mean Grant's version of Alyss. I liked Dever's version. I was very dissapointed when after ten years of wondering I read Albion and discovered an over powerful character lurking in its pages with the same name.
I was saying it was too bad that Dever didn't get to develop his version further.

I only like Dever's Alyss, NOT John Grant's. I also only liked the Joe Dever Qinifer, not that nasty Q* from the Grant books - you know, the one that was bathing naked at the lake, mmm, and she took out that Helghast with a fair bit of... motion... NO! Only Joe Dever for me man! GO JOE! Sol

When did Qinefer appear in the gamebooks? Sure you're not thinking of Viveka?
