Is it me or is money too tight to mention in this book, but never a problem in subsequent adventures? I've nothing empirical to back this up, just a feeling and I'm wondering whether others agree...?

I never thought it was. However, I never did spend money very much in the first few books either. I saved all my gold from books 1,3, and 4. Book 2 I always ended up buying at least 1 weapon (after the sinking of the Green Sceptre you are left weaponless). Book 5 I bought the occasional potion or herb. And I seem to remember purchasing some Alether. I think that's about it. So I usually had enough crowns left over from those books (at least 30) to suffice for book 6.

Yeah I was normally minted going into Book 6 too. In one of my play-throughs, I had 81 GC at the end of Book 5. Don't know how I managed that though.
And since I always played the books from Book 1, I don't know specifically about Book 6. There is that bet you can make in the Inn of the Crossed Swords (I think) in Varetta though.

It's not posssible to have 81 GC, the maximum admitted is 50; I always left my GC at monastery, so that I could always start with nearly 50 everytime.

Sure it is. Leave 50GC in safekeeping at the start of Book 5, and earn 31GC throughout that book. Which isn't that hard, if you're careful. I assume I must have gotten 19GC at the outset.

I have almost always been practically out of money halfway through book 6, but I usually pay for the horse after winning the archery tournament. Maybe I should save that "Signed Ticket to Port Bax used by Lone Wolf on his Quest to Save the World" for such an occasion in the future! There is a lot you can spend money on in this one, even before you leave Quarlen.

It's a belt pouch in the US copies.
I've mentioned this before, but if you use the "Freeway Warrior rule", then you can sacrifice one backpack slot to hold 50GC (in FW, a full ammo pouch equaled one backpack item).

It is. I don't carry 81 GC around with me. I leave 31 in safe-keeping at the Monastery. That way, I can top up my funds in cash-heavy adventures with the stash I keep in safe-keeping. Incidentally folks, is it mentioned anywhere in the rules for Book 18 that you can't access Safe Keeping between 17 and 18? Because strictly, you shouldn't be able to. -Ss

It is not written, but I believe you apply the same rule from books 10-11. You're 3000 miles away from the monastery, so there's no way you can have access to money or equipment from where you stand...unless you use FedEx! ;D

Fortunately, if you start #17 with a full belt pouch, that should last you because I can't remember any use for money in the Land of the Dead! 'I'm sorry, we only take souls here,' said the storekeeper in Ixia.

But if I remember the intro to Book 18 correctly, you end Book 17 in Lencia, in the King's Court. It wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that he'd outfit you with equipment you might need, right?
So how about you can take extra equipment from the Equipment list, but you can't get any extra stuff from safe keeping?

Anyway, back on topic. There's a chance to earn huge cash in the book if you can answer the riddle correctly. So of course, having played the book billions of times, we all know the answer to the riddle in the Halfway Inn. So, do you abuse your knowledge and fill up your money pouch if you're short? I do. -GB
