Maybe they didn't like the Tick.

You know the Power Key that the Mages of Dessi give you before going into Castle Death? Well, it may be a Red Herring. This one is funny - it sure SEEMS like you need it, but I am not so sure.
At least the text doesn't punish you if you lose it.
Elder Magi: "Lone Wolf, take this sacred Power Key. It took us 700 years to make and it will allow you to escape Kaazan-Oud alive."
Lone Wolf: "Don't need this." (chucks it over the railing of the skyship and into the water)

Is it actually possible to not have the Power Key when you reach the end of the book? Because the text seems to assume you still have it.
Lucky it wasn't a Backpack Item, anyway...

You do not lose any Special Items (except for weapon-like ones) anywhere in the adventure. But you can always just decide to throw them away... although the books before the limit of max 12 Special Items was introduced sometimes assume that you never voluntarily throw them away.

In what book was the 12-item limit introduced?

In book 8 I believe.

Yes, so if the rule was introduced in Book 8, there wouldn't be a reason to throw away the Power Key. Unless...
unless you think that the 12-item limit should be used for ALL books... ?
I wonder if the Power-Shield is just starting to go down after you have destroyed the dark power stone (doomstone?) and also taken the Lorestone away.

Well, if you use Statskeeper, it kinda enforces the 12-item rule because there are only 12 blanks in the "Special Items" section...

Wasn't the Power Shield erected by the Elder Magi, though? Destroying Zahda's source of power shouldn't affect it.

I've been using the 12 item limit for all the books at least this time around. I guess the point is moot, because many special items before book 8 are either specific to the book or take very little room (coach ticket to port bax? Boat ticket to Eula?).

Nathan,
Arg, you are right. The power shield is probably still up at the end of the book - I can't see any reason for it to be down. Heck, with all those monsters in there, why would the Elder Magi lower it?
So the book doesn't call you on it if you don't have it, but I suppose you should really have it.
More: I like to keep stupid special items (Port Bax ticket) so in case the text says, "YOU LOSE A SPECIAL ITEM!" I will say, "Oh no, my memento from Port Bax... I will miss it so (NOT)."

Heck, with all those monsters in there, why would the Elder Magi lower it? In book 20, Rimoah gives you a certain book that an expedition found in the ruins of Kazan-Oud. So, there might not be as many monsters there after the dead of Zahda if they decided to send that expedition. I believe they turned it down since the island is safer. As for these little unimportant Special Items (like the Coach Ticket), I always keep them with me until the end of the adventure for the same reason than Sol.

You can use your special items to buy Altan's horse (he wants 2 or the bow). I gave him my Padded Leather jacket and something else.

In Legacy of Vashna, why did the dead acolyte have a Black Token in his boot that would later explode?
