The recent post about the sleepdart got me wondering if anyone ever compiled a list of red herrings before. You know, those things you pick up like a packrat and then decide 8 books later you really don't need to carry with you anymore. (Though it's not a red herring, I think I carried the Prism from book 5 all the way up to book 10)
I have no examples of truly useless items myself, but I can just envision Lone Wolf carrying around a whistle for years, thinking to himself, "One day this thing is going to come in handy--I know it!"

In the Legends series 'The Labyrnth', the silver whistle did come in handy. He threw it at the wolf that was chasing him because he went after the sword. He also managed to loose a lock of Qinifer's hair (sick), the Onyx medallion, and a few other useless trinkets that he had been saving.

I got it into my head once - Book 6, I think - that a Sack of Silver might come in useful. What was I thinking, that I'd bump into a fletcher who "offers to make you silver -tipped arrows with which to kill werewolves. If you have a Sack of Silver turn to . . ."? I think it's more a question of NOT thinking. Either way, I lugged it through the remainder of the adventure before shamefacedly dumping it in the Monastery. Still couldn't let go, even then

Hehe, if you travel by barge to Thargo you can get a Silver Box with Silver in it, which you can keep in addition to your valuable sacks of Silver.

My favourite red herring is in book 3. You come to this puzzle lock, and if you enter the wrong number, the lock opens and gives you what seems to be a valuable gem. Said gem is acutally a doomstone, which posions, sicken and possibly kills you. Pretty good work of evil, no? ANother I liked was in a fighting fantasy book (*hears a mob of people yell BLASHPEMY!*) called return to firetop mountain. You had to collect 3 gold elemenatal teeth (it seemed like you might need 4). ANyway, dumped in the corner of a corrider was a bronze tooth. If you took it and tried to use it, you'd go all the way to the end of the book then die. And this was ane expceptionally brutal FF book.

Nice list. I too have a similar list with every item in the game, red herring or otherwise, and what book it's found in. I even took the time to discover which series of choices you'd have to make to acquire each item in normal gameplay. Yes, I've read the books a few too many times. I will post the list eventually... unfortunately right now it's on a piece of paper that is in storage, but I will retrieve it one of these days.
About the blue pills... are they a red herring? I seem to remember there is a point in one book where you can use them to breathe underwater... or am I remembering incorrectly?
Also, do you not use the Black Sash in book 5?

You can use them in both book 7 and 9. Later on they are called Sabito Pills and you find more uses for them, so no red herrings there. Yes, you need it to... get into a tavern, from which you can enter the Baga-darooz to escape Maouk. Without it you are caught by Maouk directly. (There are other ways to get into Baga-darooz too, of course.)

The Map of Tekaro helps prevent insta-death in the sewers of Tekaro.

You can use wine, or water (I don't remember) to find an invisibile bridge in n.7 - The Castle of Death - short after you've taken the sword at the beginning of the labyrinth. The invisibile bridge reminds me of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade...

The skeleton key... isn't this is two books? I think one of them is Castle Death...
I'll check, unless someone else knows.
Hey, is the silver comb good for anything?
