So, where do you need the map for? - Just head straight on. - It's easy! Well, yes it is for that matter, but I was referring to actually figuring it out based on clues in the book instead of 'memorizing' which way to go.

My worst death?
Other than dying 20,000 times to Kimah at the end of Book 9 (GOOD GRIEF!) , or another zillion times to the Chaos Lord in Book 11 (and you're supposed to beat him with the Sommerswerd without cheating... how?), I think the worst death is any time the rolls go against you and you die stupid deaths... freezing to death in Kalte, falling into traps, etc.

Those are annoying, yes, but I think the random die roll deaths have merit. There are just times when something occurs that your character can't so easily avoid. At these times instant death comes into play. I mean, we all hate the falling mast, but would it really be as frightening if every roll meant you survived with greater or lesser damage?

And I'\m sure Lone Wolf deserves a few of those deaths. Aren't there some deaths where you just think, "well, of course you died, for choosing that."
Well, probably not, since we ourselves choose them...
Like going to Armory, I guess...

Random chance of death is all well and good in real life, but I could live without it in my gamebooks, thank you very much!
Waht I'm trying to say is that I think the unavoidable chances of random death, such as the mast, are a bad game design choice on Joe's part. I don't have a problem with random death in principle, but there definitely ought to be a way to avoid it. It shouldn't be on the gamebook's critical path.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - if you think the random number-related deaths are a problem in Lone Wolf try Freeway Warrior! You get one of these rolls every few sections! Highway Holocaust is the worst because it is the first book and your skill totals (which act as RNT modifiers) are rather low. There are almost no decisions to speak of, but attrition and randomness combine to make your chances of survival rather low. Or maybe I just have really crappy luck?

I was just writing on the Silencer Series and realized why sometimes there's no better way to decide the character's fate. I've dealt with it by giving the player skill points, which allows them to reroll the die at any time as long as they can afford it. Thus, through skill can you overcome. I don't think I've given them enough, though... Besides, the people who hate the falling mast the most are the crazy ones who start back at book 1 every time they die. I dont think even Joe meant for us to do that.

I have a new least favorite death End of Book 10, if you are good enough to dodge the Drakkarim in Torgar, you die because you don't get the key and can't open the door if you don't have the right skill. AAARG!!!!

I've heard of several variations of death.
"3 Chances" If you die, you lose a life. Just flip the page back to before you didn't die. You have 3 chances throughout the book.
"Sleeping" The last time your character slept, was a "save". After that, if you die, you just had a bad dream. Go back to the last time you slept.
"Book at a time" You die, you have to go back to the beginning of the book you were reading. Or the halfway mark.
"Whole thing" You die, you have to start from book 1, at the ruins of the kai monastary.

I hadn't heard it before, but it is a pretty neat idea - plus the bad dream part is kinda funny/cool. Almost makes you wish for extra naps on the way. Probably tougher in books where Lone Wolf doesn't sleep... are there any like that?
