Hum...ok FRENCH CANADIANS are pronouncing it like that. There's so many words that we pronounce (and that we use) differently in Québec...oh well... J'habite à Gatineau, alors je suis au courant. Pis c'est pas l'effet d'être à côté de l'Ontario non plus. Translation: I live in Gatineau, so I would know how French Canadians pronounce it pretty well, and it's not because of the proximity of Ontario either (which is mostly anglophone).

J'habite à Gatineau, alors je suis au courant. Pis c'est pas l'effet d'être à côté de l'Ontario non plus. Me, I always heard it pronounced "shianti" in Montréal. After looking in the dictionnary, it's true that it is pronounced Kianti. So, the next time I'll hear someone to say this word in its wrong pronunciation, I'll act like a nerd and tell him the right one. A little bit of culture doesn't hurt! EDIT: My original post was in French, but, before someone tells me to do so, I translated it. This is an English forum after all and it wouldn't be fair for you to not understand what was written.

Anyway, it is normal for Joe to adopt the names from the real world. He needs them as initial idea, right Joe? (I hope he's reading this ;D )

Err, not quite. We still pronounce it kianti in French as well. I've never really heard anyone pronounce it shianti. On the other hand, don't you pronounce Mon cher like the 'sh' sound? French has a lot of special case scenario words from what I remember in high school, maybe as many unique verb conjugations as English does!

Ok, here's another one. Ghanesh was one the Darklords of Helgedad while Ganesh is a Hindu elephant-headed god.

That is such an obvious remark Incidentally, I believe that "gesundheit" literally means "good health" or something similar. NS.

Even more so! Though if I recall my limited French correctly, it has much fewer special case pronunciations and these are mostly loan words ("chianti" indeed being an example).

I wish I had taken more French after high school. I was able to understand just enough of that to become confused.
Although this isn't exactly a borrowed name, I just thought I'd share that I grew up about 5 miles from a town called Summerland. Not too far removed from Sommerlund, eh?
There really were giaks in the woods with I was a teenager with my stick-sword. I promise....
