andyr: Thanks for the history lesson, never knew Joe had designed that for Warhammer! Even though I don't do the fig mass-battle games (I have a vague idea how much my brother's spent on it!), it is still cool to know! Zipp: Shrewsbury, MA; about 3000 miles east of you, give or take a few hundred. We're right next to Worcester, which is the large city in central Massachusetts, and the most populous after Boston. Sol: Frankenstein's Monster seemed more to me like a construct, i.e. a Flesh Golem, than an undead creature. More I think about it though, maybe it'd best qualify as both. I seem to recall mentioning this somewhere the other day, probably on this forum. Can't remember where. . . Probably this same thread!

@ Sol:
well, your point is quite good for deeper moral issues, but in fact in a fantasy world such as Magnamund there are guys and monsters who gloat and delight in being evil incarnate... There are more "gray" fantasy settings, but LW does not seem to live in one of them. As for neutral necromancy, you talk from a point of view of Earth's history, but there are quite a few fantasy settings (both novel and RPG) where necromancy itself is not evil, but the usage of it. Some cases:
1) Voodoo zombie animation legends: the zombies are seen as a normal part of society, the animation of the dead is part of a religion not wicked or perverse, just with a different concept of the life/death barrier than that of Westerners. 2) Frankenstein: there is not "evil agency" in the creation of the Creature. Dr. Frankenstein (novel, not Hammer flicks) could have many moral issues and weakeness, but he achieved the animation through pure scientific methods, the same you can use to build a car. 3) The animation of a corpse to defend its tomb against robbers or intruders (if you desecrate a guy's final rest, who is the evil one?)
When I said "evil necromancy", I had in mind a fantasy model in which in order to animate a corpse, create a composite corpse monster, etc, you need the *explicit* aid of an evil agent, be it malevolous spectre, demon, dark deity, and that the "spark" which gives life to the undead being is a malevolent spirit or figment. As opposed to animation of corpses without the intervention of an evil being. Voodoo loas are not evil, as Egyptian warding magic or physics aren't. Some of their practitioners, that's another story

andyr,
Wow, you bring up several very good points - you know, I might have to start thinking about these things differently! I like your example of the Voodoo culture that believes the veil between life and death to be much thinner - I guess the Western Thought sees death as pretty horrible and horrendous, but then again, maybe there are some that would welcome the chance to hang out with their dead (zombie?) relatives one more time.
The defender-of-the-tomb is a fun example, too, and just goes to show it is not the tool that is evil, it is the way that it is used and the intent behind it that matters.

The answer has been sitting in my profile all the time... But yes, though the spelling of my name is very international, I am indeed Swedish. I believe that this spelling is actually the most common one here too, even though the 'h' is completely redundant with the Swedish pronounciation of the name.

But in the Grey Star series the Shianti wizards have the power of necromancy.
Also I have been reading the recent rulebooks for the Lone Wolf RPG and it seems that becoming a crypt spawn can be the result of failing to achieve a higher level of some character classes. (Cener Druid)
Careful Thomas... you might get attacked by a vegetarian cannibal... ;D

In case anyone wonders what happened, I decided that it was time to remove a certain off-topic discussion here. (This included my own posts, if that is any consolation to you who had your post counts lowered).

OK it was a crap joke... Vegitarian cannibals only eat swedes... ...making fun of the fact that a swede is both a type of vegetable and a person of Swedish nationality. Again apologies...

Well, at least it wasn't a carp joke; I have heard enough about carp on the trivia thread to last me a lifetime!

If you've heard enough about goldfish, Relenoir, stop carping on about them! *all together now: groan* And I get the impression that my asking what was removed only started the pointless discussion again... *waits for the heavy hand of Thomas to obliterate our thoughts once more*
NS (suitably contrite)

No, the thing that was removed was political banter and had little or nothing to do with carps... besides the fact that they are mostly scum sucking bottom feeders.
