On a side note, are DVD players in Europe Region Free? If not, what region are they? European DVD players are Region 2. Other areas which use this standard are Japan, the Middle East, Egypt, South Africa and Greenland.

Really?! Then you guys can get Advent Children when it comes out in Japan! Not that you'd be able to understand any of it, but it would look nice. I'm sure you can get some Chinese translation easily and cheaply! I got the Azumanga DVD waaaay before it came out here. A special box, chinese translation (which is close enough for me), and the entire series for $14.00

Yes, we Europeans can indeed get our hands on the latest anime sensation to rock the land of the Rising Sun. The only downside is that most Europeans are about as likely to understand it as we are to understand the latest comedy out-take DVD from Aljazeera.

And just to add to the confusion, although UK uses Region 2 Encoding, they use PAL display, whereas Japan (I think) uses NTSC, so anyone wanting to play Japanese Region 2 DVDs in the Uk will need a TV / DVD capable of displaying a NTSC picture signal. It's just a little confusing :-( (@ Zipp: I probably got the same Azumanga DVD as you--no crappy English dub, but dirt cheap for it.)

Really? nice box with the characters on it and three dvds inside? I think the box is a fold out of the classroom, with the characters in various situations.
A good buy, the only complaint is that episodes 1-5 are poorly and confusingly translated, and there are defenite errors elsewhere too, but it's Chinese translated, so what'd you expect? i got it sooner and a hell of a lot cheaper than everyone else.

Well, I'll definitely have to pick up that new Zelda and pre-order it so I can get the improved version of Windwaker! I liked Windwaker, but I did feel a bit cheated in that there were only a couple of good, long dungeons. Most of the game time was spent sailing around in the boat. Even thought Majora's Mask only had the four major dungeons and then the final one, there seemed to be a lot more side quests that involved more than just one room. I know the European games are different because when I went to Sweden in my teens, they had a game I couldn't find in the U.S., but I didn't buy it because I found out it wouldn't work anyways.

Rel, you are absolutely right! The Europeans generally get wat's known as the International version, which is the final release version of a game (released everywhere except America).

Does that mean it's better? I thought it had something to do with resolution or power supply (220 vs. 120 volts) the more I think about it. . . I'm not sure.

It generally (always with RPGs) has added material. For instance, FF7 international includes an extra scene with Zack and Cloud that explains how Cloud came to SPOILER emulate Zack's behavoir
And Kingdom Hearts has added dialouge between some characters, some new characters that hint at happenings in the yet to be released sequel, and a scene where Cloud meets Sephiroth and they battle.
ICO has an entire replay mode snuck in, with subtitles for the foreign language, and a two player mode.
You get the point.

Re: Cloud and Zack, do you mean the scene that happens (spoiler) if you visit the basement of the mansion when you have already gone through the dream sequence with Cloud and Tifa? Or is it something else? In Kingdom Hearts, which I haven't finished but really like, I know you can fight Sephiroth at the Colliseum, but he kills me every time! Guess I need more levels. Is there someplace else in the other version, or is this it?

I do indeed refer to that scene in FF7! I forgot that was in the North American release as well. Kingdom Hearts: yes, you can fight Sephiroth in the North American version, but there is an added scene in the International Version where Cloud fights Sephiroth YOU HAVEN'T BEATEN IT YET?! THE ENDING IS AMAZINGLY GOOD!

YOU HAVEN'T BEATEN IT YET?! THE ENDING IS AMAZINGLY GOOD! Heh, and this sums up my general gaming experience. I love computer games, but so many of them I never get to play, and even those I do, I never seem to manage to finish... lack of time, first and foremost, coupled with a lack of commitment (once the lack of time has taken me away I find it hard to go back), and of course in some cases a lack of skill. Despite my love of gaming, I'm just a dabbler, I guess. *sigh* (But I did finish FF7! Fairly thoroughly too...) EDIT: Oh, and FF1 and 2 are available (in Australia at least) for PlayStation as "Final Fantasy Origins". 3 and 4 were released as the "Final Fantasy Anthology"... errm, 6 was released on its own... I think 5 was too, I know it was in there somewhere...

Origins is FFs 1 and II with improved graphics whereas Anthology is just straight ports of IV and V. You were right about FFVI being released as a standalone title, but to my knowledge FFIII has never been available on PSOne. In the UK, anyhow.

Really? nice box with the characters on it and three dvds inside? I think the box is a fold out of the classroom, with the characters in various situations. It's a 3-disc set fold out card & plastic container, comes in a plastic removable "slip on" sleeve. The interior artwork isn't a classroom, but it has a couple of pics of Chiyo behind discs 1 and 2 and several drawings of the cast in various poses (sans teachers). Yeah, exactly. A niggle I had is that some of the cultural jokes are explained, but some aren't. IIRC one subtitle in a later episode actually reads something like: "[Insert Japanese cultural explanation.]" One of the things you pay a lot for on UK/US DVDs is the voice "talent" in the dub. Here's a tip, distributors--don't bother. Let us save a shedload of money and buy the subbed versions instead!

My gamer's sense detects an error! The final fantasys that have been released in America are all of them except III (unless it came as a seperate package).
1 and 2 have now been rereleased as Origins of the Crystal, shortened to Origins. 4 and Chrono Trigger were rereleased as Final Fanatasy Chronicles. 5 and 6 were rereleased as Final Fantasy Anthologies.
